This glossary is general information about employment in Costa Rica. It does not constitute legal, tax or employment advice, it does not replace consulting a qualified lawyer, and CINDE Jobs is not responsible for decisions taken on the basis of these definitions.
It describes the ordinary private-sector employment regime. Other regimes have rules of their own that are not covered here: the public sector under a collective agreement, domestic work, agricultural and livestock operations, and self-employed or voluntarily insured people.
Written from the Labour Code, Law 2412, Law 7092 and official MTSS and CCSS material. It is not an official publication of any of those institutions, nor endorsed by them. Last reviewed: September 2, 2026.
