Metrology

Metrology is the science of measurements, taking into account the methods and means used in all activities of life to guarantee the uniformity and accuracy required in the measurements made. Metrology exposes the reality in which we live through the study of the properties of matter, energy, time, space and the interactions between them, expressing the laws that govern these phenomena with models and mathematical formulas deduced from observations and measurements made according to the scientific method. In Costa Rica, the Costa Rican Metrology Laboratory (LACOMET), defines three fundamental axes in Metrology: 1. Physical Metrology: of important relationship with the national productive sector, as well as with the secondary laboratories that provide services in the country. 2. Chemical Metrology: science that safeguards and supports the chemical measurements of a country, ensuring that the measurements made in the environmental, public health, food safety, industrial processes, energy and technology areas are supported and are carried out in a suitable or reliable way. 3. Legal Metrology: verify compliance with Technical and Legal Regulations regarding units of measurement, measurement methods and procedures, measuring instruments and materialized units. It is aimed at guaranteeing correctness and equity in commercial relations and ensuring the health of members of society, as well as the protection of the environment. The productive sector has a particular need to improve its quality and traceability systems, so an adequate measurement / metrology system comes to play a fundamental role in production processes.
